Graphite and Spade: Designs by Becky Brooks

Hello, I’m Becky! I have been designing gardens in the Portland area since 2017. I focus on habitat resilience, sustainability, and beauty for the modern garden in the Pacific Northwest. I am passionate about incorporating native plants into structured designs, but I always create an opportunity for thoughtful wildness in every landscape. I am equally passionate about the care and development of established gardens, and sharing my knowledge with others through consultations and side by side gardening sessions. My relationship with Sauvie Island Natives Nursery, where I work part time, enhances my designs and the client experience.

Along with my love of thoughtful design, I am passionate about my own four season garden, aspects of which are focused on dynamic plantings and succession. I collect seeds, propagate plants and make composts that originate from and fertilize my own garden. I also keep backyard ducks who free range. The sight of them napping amidst the tall grasses and waddling along their well worn paths is transportive. My own garden represents what I try to do for clients: it is grounded in the ecology of the local environment, from the insects, to the birds and other wildlife, to the soil itself.

When I am not tending to gardens or my feathered friends, I can be found inside my home tending my ever-expanding unusual houseplant collection, which has become my indoor garden.

I love helping clients create gardens that contribute to the environment and to their own well being. Gardens are capable of transporting us and simultaneously grounding us in place and moment. They are an expression of who we are, the time we live in, and a hope for the future.
